The story of Joseph is one of the most wonderful, moving, and heartwarming accounts in the Bible. There is more space dedicated to Joseph in the book of Genesis than to any other person.
Joseph was an arrogant teen-ager when his father, Jacob, gave him an exquisite coat of many colors. Joseph was obviously his father's favorite, and his brothers hated him for that. They sold him into slavery in the far away land of Egypt. He was out of sight and out of mind.
Joseph struggled in Egypt just to endure, but he prayed to the Lord God for help and never lost his faith. Finally, when the time was right, God lifted Joseph from the depths of despair and set him on the top of the world. Joseph became second only to the Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.
When famine swept across the earth, Joseph's brothers came to Egypt to buy grain, the staple of life. It was Joseph's chance to get even with his brothers, but he could not do it. He had learned to trust, to obey, to hope, to love, and to forgive. He, his father, and his brothers became a real family for the first time. God had blessed the sons of Jacob beyond belief.
Joseph's costume was difficult to put together. Bill Young could not find an appropriate gold pendant, so he carved one out of wood. He could not find a bolt of blue and gold striped cloth for the headdress, so his seamstress took a bolt of blue cloth and a bolt of gold cloth, cut the strips separately, and sewed them together. Bill painted the cobra head on the front of the headdress in the colors of King Tutankhamen's death mask.
