History In Person

"I Have Not Yet Begun to Fight!"

Hear the inspiring story of Captain John Paul Jones of the Continental Navy. When Bill Young portrays Jones, you will be on the deck of the Bonhomme Richard with the wind in your hair, the roar of guns in your ears, and the flash of swords before your eyes. Jones battles the British frigate Serapis against impossible odds, but wins this incredible sea battle simply because he will not give up. The talk also includes anecdotes from the life of Jones before and after his famous battle.

Jones rose from humble beginnings to become a French knight and "the father of the U.S. Navy." He did it through sheer determination. His story teaches us to "Never give up! Never surrender!"

Although John Paul Jones was in the American Continental Navy, he wore the uniform of his opponent, the British Royal Navy. Bill's seamstress copied the uniform from a portrait of Britain's most famous sailor, Lord Nelson, who was Jones's contemporary. The uniform has yards of genuine gold braid in three different widths and convex buttons with a rope and anchor pattern that are exact replicas of the ones that Jones wore. The epaulets are made of spun gold bullion thread. The hat is bi-cornered and is in the 1776 Continental Navy pattern. Jones's shoes, with rectangular brass buckles, are copies of ones worn by officers of the Continental Navy. Jones carries a sword similar to the one that King Louis XVI presented to Jones when he made him a knight.

"...the presentation was magical. Captain Jones kept the group spellbound. Young boys and girls to the elderly were riveted by his patriotic presentation… Bill Young provides a level of professionalism seen all too infrequently these days."
